La Ville introuvable est une histoire d’amour sur fond de roman picaresque : Lin Xiangfu, un jeune propriétaire foncier du Nord de la Chine, ouvre un soir sa porte à deux étrangers prétendument frère et sœur.
The Untraceable City is a love story set against the backdrop of a picaresque novel: Lin Xiangfu, a young landowner in northern China, opens his door one evening to two strangers claiming to be brother and sister.
Ils disent venir d’une ville du nom de Wencheng, très loin, au sud du pays. Nous sommes au début du XXe siècle.
They say they come from a town called Wencheng, a long way away in the south of the country. We are at the beginning of the 20th century.
Au matin, le jeune homme, dénommé Aqiang, annonce à son hôte qu’il doit se rendre au plus vite auprès de l’un de leurs parents à Pékin. Il lui confie donc sa sœur Xiaomei, qu’il reviendra chercher sans tarder.
In the morning, the young man, called Aqiang, tells his host that he has to get to one of their relatives in Beijing as soon as possible. He entrusted him with his sister Xiaomei, whom he would return to collect without delay.
Mais le temps passe, Lin Xiangfu et Xiaomei tombent amoureux l’un de l’autre puis se marient. La vie est harmonieuse quand, de façon imprévisible, la jeune femme disparaît, emportant avec elle une partie des lingots de son époux.
But as time went by, Lin Xiangfu and Xiaomei fell in love and married. Life was harmonious when, unexpectedly, the young woman disappeared, taking some of her husband’s bullion with her.
Triste, humilié et honteux, Lin Xiangfu reprend courageusement le cours de sa vie quand, tout aussi soudainement, Xiaomei lui revient pour mettre au monde leur enfant.
Saddened, humiliated and ashamed, Lin Xiangfu courageously resumed the course of his life when, just as suddenly, Xiaomei returned to give birth to their child.
Période si tendrement heureuse que le couple se remarie joyeusement mais, un mois après la naissance de leur petite fille, alors que leur amour est grandissant, Xiaomei s’évapore à nouveau. Lin Xiangfu est terrassé, il décide de retrouver son aimée. L’enfant emmailloté sur son ventre, il descend vers le sud, entreprend un voyage parsemé d’embûches. Mais il ne trouve pas Wencheng, ville inconnue, ville introuvable, et finit par s’installer avec son bébé à Xizhen, un bourg où l’accent local lui semble étrangement proche de celui de son aimée.
It was such a tender, happy period that the couple happily remarried, but a month after the birth of their little girl, just as their love was growing, Xiaomei disappeared again. Lin Xiangfu was devastated and decided to find his beloved. With the child wrapped in swaddling clothes on his stomach, he headed south, embarking on a journey strewn with pitfalls. But he couldn’t find Wencheng, an unknown town, a town he couldn’t find, and ended up settling with his baby in Xizhen, a village where the local accent seemed strangely similar to that of his beloved.
Magnifique personnage que celui de cette étrange jeune femme. Mais l’histoire est encore longue, imprévisible, magistrale.
This strange young woman is a magnificent character. But the story is still long, unpredictable and masterful.
